Less is More! New strength of Prednisolone for Children
Mission Pharmacal announced the launch of its grape-flavored Prednisolone Sodium Phosphate Oral Solution. Prednisolone is a glucocorticoid (anti-inflammatory steroid) indicated in the treatment of severe asthma attacks in children. This is NOT a body building or androgenic steroid.
This new oral solution comes in a higher 25mg/5mL strength, which means 40% less volume compared to the 15mg/5mL formula. The new 25 mg/mL strength will be available in 8oz bottles starting April 2013.
While the goal is to control asthma so medications such as Prednisolone and Prednisone are needed less than once a year, it’s nice to know that a smaller volume of medication can be given and still provide the correct dose. While the grape flavoring is a great idea, most steroid liquid medications don’t taste like candy! For this reason, requiring less volume to administer is helpful.
If you or your child’s asthma has required treatment with more than one oral or injectable steroid course per year, the national asthma guidelines indicate the asthma is NOT controlled based on RISK. Let an asthma specialist guide you in managing your asthma.
