Family Allergy & Asthma Care of Montana provides solutions to keep you well. In addition to our allergy testing, allergy shots, lung function testing and action plans, we offer the following services to our patients:
Influenza vaccine (flu shot)
The CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months old get a flu shot. Patients with asthma, children from 6 months to 2 years old and adults over 65 years old are especially encouraged to vaccinate. The influenza vaccine is an annual vaccine that can protect against influenza virus. It is available each fall in anticipation of flu season which runs from late fall through spring. Flu shots are generally administered via the arm; however a nasal mist vaccination is available for some individuals without asthma.
Food and medication challenges
A food challenge can be helpful when there is conflicting evidence as to whether a food allergy exists or if it has resolved. For example, most school-aged children will “outgrow” milk or egg allergies. To determine if a food allergy still exists, a patient can undergo a food challenge by ingesting small amounts of the food in question as determined by history and allergy tests. Our medical team provides an overseen, methodical approach to this type of testing.
A similar protocol is used to assess drug allergies when no available skin or blood tests are available. We oversee medication challenges if there is a need for the medication and there is a reasonable chance the challenge will be successful.
Food and medication challenges may be time-consuming, however they provide answers for patients when no other allergy testing resources are available.
