On the Eighth Day of Christmas…
On the Eighth Day of Christmas my true love sent to me……Eight Maids a Milking!
Got milk?! Though it would be a great gift from your ‘true love,’ it can also be unfortunate to those who are allergic to milk. Roughly 2.5% of children younger than 3 years of age are allergic to milk. Almost all infants who develop milk allergy do so in their first year of life. Thankfully, most children who have milk allergy will outgrow it in the first 5 years of life. Fortunately, milk is one of the easiest ingredients to substitute in baking and cooking. It can be substituted, in equal amounts, with water or fruit juice. Goat’s milk is NOT a safe alternative to cow’s milk as the proteins in both cow and goat milk are very similar. If you are milk allergic, yet looking to enjoy a cup of “milk,” fortified rice or soy milk are good substitutes. For infants on formula, most will tolerate an extensively broken down casein-based formula such as Alimentum® or Nutramigen.® If the infant is not allergic to soy, a soy-based formula is also available.
Do not give up drinking milk— instead, reach for a healthy option and drink up! Those maids aren’t milking for nothing. 🙂
